Anchor Nearly finished this. Oh my god - has absolutely opened my eyes to the crimes and sins of Americans. Absolutely shocking. Toward the end there are pages and pages of names of people who have been lynched, including people shot by the police going into the present day. I thought it was made up. I started googling them. Jesus. They were all real cases.
I was obviously aware of people being lynched in this period of American history, Emmet Till is the hook the book is hung on - but I was unaware of the brazen nature of it and how no one was held accountable. Also how late into the 20th c it went on. Strange fruit indeed. I wonder how much of this is on the curriculum in the states.
It is an excellent book btw.
