oneallanclarke Trespasses by Louise Kennedy. Set in 70s Northern Ireland. The major plot strand is a doomed love affair between a young Catholic primary school teacher who is constrained by sectarianism and sexism, and a much older Protestant barrister/civils rights campaigner. Main sub plot is the teacher's involvement with the kids of a family who are victimised for the parents' mixed marriage. Lots of foreshadowing of impending tragedy: the teacher’s favourite novel is Jude the Obscure, the older son from the terrorised family is studying Hamlet and is frustrated that the hero doesn’t take revenge sooner, the teacher goes to see Chinatown, and then there’s this:
Bod Good book this, it tells the story of Sacchi and AC Milan between 87-89 and the great team he built to win the European cup in 89. You can see where Bielsa got his ideas, Sacchi used the high press, playing players in different positions, murderball, and intensive training methods, he really was at the front of modern football methods we see today.
Under-the-ground Just finished Bonos book. 40 songs. Fuck me does he go on. I knew he was religious but Christ, he thinks he is some kind of wiseman. Makes me think he is more of a prick than I did already. A missed opportunity coz U2 have done some really good stuff. He could have got people back on them. Not with this though. Don’t bother reading it.
Anchor Under-the-ground Have you heard them murdering their own songs at that Las Vegas enormodome residency? It's pretty sad in many ways.
Under-the-ground Anyone read this. Like a manifesto., based on love, work& knowledge. The opposite of now. Consume, buy and get more. A bit of its time, but really interesting. I try and live more to the former. But I probably fail, but at least I try I guess.
Under-the-ground Just finished this. One of the best music books I have read this year. Yes you probably know the albums but the writer really gets into them. The only album I didn’t know was the go betweens. This book makes me want to go to Glasgow. Anyway I reckon up a lot of people’s strasse on here. Comes well recommended from me
Anchor https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/m001ry4s?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile William Boyd short story written for radio 4 or summat. Five 15 minute chunks. I'm one in. Enjoying.
CBIT Just done another of those Mick Heron ones, Joe Country, was ok(ish) but I'm not that bothered about reading any more of his. (He's the uk's version of James Patterson to my mind)
Young_Marxist_at_Tescos CBIT Halfway through Bad Actors and yeah, like the last 2 or 3, there’s not much to go on. You’re always wondering what Jackson Lamb’s up to, but take him out of it and none of it works.
hendersonjones Odd_Job The Evertonian lad who looks after their fanzine “when skys are grey” was writing a biography of Mick Head wonder if it’s this ?
