Ooh it’s good. Gets a bit fractured towards the end, almost like it’s run out of stream, but really enjoyed it. The De Freitas stuff is great, and he nails Cope hilariously.

Under-the-ground Hope I don’t spoil it too much, but there’s this hilarious bit when they’re recording Revolutionary Spirit and realise it’s in mono and the balance is a bit off, etc. “How did that happen?” Simpson asks an engineer friend. He thinks for a moment. “Drugs?”

I didn’t like Annihilation much at all, ended up skimming and wasn’t at all driven to read the sequels. But the film is very impressive indeed and I’d definitely watch a follow-up, especially if Alex Garland was involved.

oneallanclarke I liked the sense of unease throughout Annihilation, even if I wasn’t really sure what was going on. This was more like a straight thriller, set outside of Area X. I’ll get the final one out of curiosity as much as anything.

Dipping my toe into sci-fi; recommendations welcomed.

Kevin_Stapleton Fair dos. I heard that the second one was quite a bit different.
Sci-fi-wise, I don’t read so much. I always have an eye out for the latest William Gibson but not too much otherwise. Having said that, possibly the greatest novel, (actually set of 4 novels making the complete work), I’ve ever read is The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. I must have re-read it 5 or 6 times in the last 40 years. A work of utter genius that has the rep of being the Ulysses of science fiction. Vandeermeer has been compared to Wolfe in technique, too, which may well be why I picked up Annihilation in the first place.

Angels with Dirty Faces by Jonathan Wilson. History of Argentinian football. He’s not shy of piling on the facts, our Jonathan. The overall effect can be a bit numbing. But totally worth it to discover that Carlos Bilardo, who had qualified as a gynaecologist at same time as his playing career at Estudiantes, found out from a gyno colleague that a River player’s wife had a had a wart removed from her fanny and used the info to provoke the player into trying to smack him during a game and getting sent off.
Other point is that I’ve never read a book in which it’s taken so long for the hero to be introduced:

It's really good. Some of the music sounds shite but Mr Davis writes really well and is devoid of pretension; Kavus is more the muso guy and occasionally lapses into jargon. Some great anecdotes - at times you have to remind yourself that this is Steve 'Interesting' Davis writing - such as persuading Barry Hearne to carry 70 obscure Brazilian jazz funk albums as hand luggage after a tournament in Rio.

I had no idea he was also a massive rare soul nut in the 80's.

Kevin_Stapleton I knew he was by virtue of a lad - Dave, I was at school with who bought and sold soul records. Pre internet, Dave advertised in some obscure specialist fanzine/magazine. Got a phone call from a fellow enthusiast - Steve, Dave had some 7” singles he wanted, buyer said he was due in the north on business in the following week or so. One night, there was a knock at the door and Steve Davies is stood there, saying I’ve come for the records we agreed I’d buy a few weeks ago. With a chauffeur driven car waiting for him.

However I'm a fan of The Utopia Strong and his musical journey. It's essentially charting that? Yeah?

Anchor Yeah it’s alternate chapters roughly charting their life in music up to and including Utopia Strong, but it goes off down side roads and diversions all the time. It’s basically two music heads talking about the stuff they love.

CBIT The greatest of all crime writers, in my opinion. I’ve been reading him for 30 years. Transcends the genre,. Wonderful prose, memorable characters, asks hard questions about America. Nick Cave is a big fan, incidentally.
There’s a new Robicheaux coming in the summer, after a gap of a couple or more years. Given Burke’s age, there’s a chance it’ll be the last

I'm struggling book wise. I started the concise history of the Spanish Civil War by Paul Preston but it just seems to be lots acronyms and abbreviations. I also started Meantime by Frankie Boyle.

Just not in the zone I guess.
