Albums - old and new

Harvest

YMAT's recent offerings had me revisiting some old WP stuff - things that I'd not listened to in years. I dug out my last WP purchase which I see as fairly recent - just the 19 years ago. An absolute pleasure to listen to and a real gem of an album. A real grown up sound, big deserts and spaghetti western theme plus the usual heartbreaks.

Pet Sounds. Watched a great documentary about the Beach Boys the other night. The rest of the band used to call Brian Wilson "dog ears" because they said he could hear frequencies that other people couldn't. When they were recording the vocal harmonies he would make them do it again and again even though it sounded perfect to them because he could hear the slightest nuances in pitch. Interesting that when they were kids Brian, Dennis and Carl used to sing 3 part harmonies in the back on the car on family journeys. That's why it sounds sublime I guess. It covered how things got dark after that which I already knew about but I found out loads of other just interesting things I didn't know.

fuzzy I’ve seen a few. Which one were you watching? The bits I’ve seen with the session music are really good, The Wrecking Crew. They’re so complimentary of Brian’s talents.

Think it was just called The Beach Boys, out this year on Disney plus. Yeah fascinating about the Wrecking Crew. They did a great job on the Phil Spector produced albums but Brian Wilson seemed to unleash them and enable them to take it to another level. I had never realised that vocals aside there were effectively two Beach Boys bands. A touring band and a studio band.

fuzzy I’ve seen that ( the touring without Brian and the recording with session musicians) and never really figured out how it played out.

Have you watched Love And Mercy? I think it’s a good movie.

fuzzy Met a really nice guy once when out with DHM who’d photographed Wilson for a magazine. It was funny how he told it but also kind of sad. Think the shoot was in a sand pit. All the while this guy was setting up his photography equipment Brian kept asking him if he’d finished. Constantly.
I’ve seen him doing Pet Sounds and it was absolutely beautiful. One of the best concerts I’ve ever attended. Five minute ovation after God Only Knows. As soon as I got there I saw all these families together and wished I’d brought my kids. It was truly joyous. Little ones dancing with grandparents who were probably into them the first time around in the aisles.

Preparing to decorate our bedroom - lots of filling, sanding and standing back with hands on hips. Got this little gem on from '96 which I first came across last year. Soundscapes/shoegaze/ambient/Mogwai vibe.
