Jon started another thread asking what are the essential albums that are seemingly in everyone's collection. That kind of turned into this thread which is really an album club but called Essential Albums as it needed to be called something. That's it really.

‘Essential’ has to be your own personal take. But I’ve given up trying to work out what the criteria is for proposing albums for this thread. I’ve listened to some old favourites these last few months, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by stuff new to me, and I’ve listened to some right old tut.

Let's just call them 'albums I like, what do you think?' For example, it seems the world and their family love Radiohead's 'Ok Computer'. Not for me. 'The Bends' is their best album, in fact, one of the best albums I've ever heard. I imagine Cooley has a different opinion, though... 😆

With you on The Bends v OK Computer - alhough that too is a good album. Also, Kid A sounds like I've just given my kids a Bontempi and a cheap drum machine and locked them in a room. It doesn't matter if I get it or not, it's dog shit. I prefer the raw emotional introspection of Pablo Honey. Yeah. I know. I'm a Weirdo and I don't belong here.

space Nice to see we agree, completely, on something! My sister sent me Kid A on cassette (!) and I laughed out load as I played it! I thought it was a spoof, to be honest. Pablo Honey is my second favourite, too.

Cooley Same here re Radiohead. I'm sure it's technically proficient but just not a nice noise to my ears. Same with Muse.
I do like Roddy Frame's music though, and a cool bloke also.

I couldn't listen to the same stuff all the time, I love discovering new and old music. I used to listen to The Jam but wouldn't shed a tear if I never heard another track again ever. Used to like the second Oasis album but now think it's just bland nonesense, I mean Wonderwall - just plodding rubbish.

I've listened to more 'new' (new and old) stuff, in the last five years than I have ever done.

I have a playlist called 'My Favourites', and most of that stuff is on it. It's my biggest playlist.

Re. Radiohead. The first three albums were ace, in increasing orders of magnitude. What happened after OK, Computer, I have no idea. Perhaps the Prentious Fairy sprinkled some of her sparkly, magic dust on Thom Yorke, or maybe he shoved a Pretentious suppository up his own arse, fuck knows. If I were Ed O'Brian, I'd have whacked him over the head with my Rickenbacker....

I've started selling parts of my collection. I had original pressings of everything the Roses did but got rid on Discogs. If I never heard a Roses song again I'd not be arsed. Used to love them. Like flan. I'd say the last decade or so I've been listening to more new (new and old) than ever. I just don't see the point in looking back bar a few artists. Julian Cope mainly!

I fucking love new music.
