Not too much of a back story really. It was 1995 and I was off work on long term sick. Apart from going to the hospital for physiotherapy there wasn’t too much to do, so I spent my time going around the record shops and seeing what new albums were out. Britpop was being played all the time on the radio and back then I used to watch Later with Jools Holland, as a lot of new bands tended to appear on there. I suppose I was wanting to hear something a bit different. Then one night this band came on called McAlmont & Butler with a song called “Yes”. I thought McAlmont s voice sounded great and I knew Butler could play guitar plus they had a string section. I went out and bought the album and after a few plays, thought it sounded great. I went to see them at the Garage at Highbury & Islington in I think it was February `96. It was the Friday that the IRA ceasefire broke as they announced it as I was leaving the tube station. When I say them, Butler had unfortunately left by then, but it was a great concert anyway. I bought a David McAlmont CD based on this CD, but was very disappointed.

This won t be everyone`s cup of tea, but what is.

If someone could post up the album, it would be very much appreciated.
This is what made me buy it.

Scratches head and wonders why I've never heard this album before? That single is fucking amazing. I think I first heard it about ten years ago. I've missed out on a lot. Some voice. Some guitar player. Looking forward to this.

Yes is an absolute banger!

Got this a few years ago from a charity shop, based on the two singles. Love it. Hate Suede, but love Bernard Butler in this set up. Terrific stuff. 9/10.

Hits home hard does this one. Well that song 'Yes' does.

Big break up song for me. Came out just as I was picking myself up off the floor (or literally learning myself to get up off my knees), from a girl I'd bought my first house with, who was having an affair with a guy from work, whilst I was working away earning Habitat vouchers.

That voice of an angel is still too difficult to hear, takes me right back to a terraced cottage in Eccleshill. Too heavy even now.

What a song, one of the greatest UK singles ever to be released for me. Came out of nowhere, with strings attached.

How cool is Butler in that performance? Reading about it, it was a fuck-you, break up song too. Directed at a band, and not a...

Fuck it, she doesn't deserve it still.

"Yes" and "You Do" are world class but I've never heard much else by them. Here's my chance.

I know this album well. I am a big suede fan & loved Butlers playing.
The album is cobbled together from bsides from the two singles which were double cd releases. I have them somewhere.
I saw them before butler left at Hanover grand. I think they only did this concert prior to them coming back. The 2nd album is good as well, but this is the better one.
This reminds of Chelmsford where I lived as it was on heavy rotation.
A different side to britpop shite & was head & shoulders above a lot from the same time. Butler is a superb player but a bit of a tosser if you ask me, shame mcalmont never went bigger as he has a great voice. He came from nowhere. Brilliant.
            Essential 9/10
