Just watched Louis Theroux's film on the settlers of the West Bank and the plans of their Fuhreress, Daniella Weiss, for Gaza. There's nothing in it that holds any hope for the Palestinians, nothing at all.

doggybag I'm sure we would say the same if Theroux did a documentary amongst ardent supporters of Hamas in Gaza. Or of the more militant elements in the West Bank. They equally don't offer anything that holds hope for Jews. Weiss is no more or less reflective of mainstream Israel than Sinwar was of ordinary Gazans.
That she commands support in Netanyahu's government is deeply worrying. But that worry is held by many Israelis, many of whom continue to demonstrate in ever larger numbers against him. The response from the government and authorities has been brutal at times. But it's nothing compared to what Hamas are increasingly handing out to the people of Gaza who show dissent or challenge their stranglehold on power and resources.
Louis hasn't done a film about them yet.

Weiss is not reflective of wider Israeli society. Not sure what your issue is with that.

She's not alone by any means. From the Guardian today -

Difficult to see the Israeli plans and persecutions as anything less than Treblinka, Auschwitz etc etc. Shipping millions (yes millions) of innocents off their land or properties and sending them to whatever desperate shithole camp they march people off to. The difference being that the Israelis are trying to kill as many innocent Palestinians before they get instead of waiting til they get there. Although they've been using the people of the likes of 'refugee' camps such as Jenin as target practice for years.

It's deeply deeply worrying and there's nobody standing up to the murdering bastards. Just when we needed a decent honest world leader we're left with Trump and Putin and idiots like Starmer.

Djpekingman she isn't a lone voice. The settler movement have been protected by many in power for too long. But I stand by the suggestion that her views are not shared by the majority in Israel. And that attitudes are changing. The recent 'Air Force' letter is just one indication of that. They're seen as Israel's primary defenders in many respects and are loved and admired by almost all. That so many have been so strident in their criticism is telling.
I can't agree with your comparisons with the Holocaust however. If Israel were minded to do as you suggest they could and would. They are not implementing industrial extermination on the scale seen in WWII.

edited to add that my comment about comparisons wasn't designed to play down the proposed incursions and land grabs. I just don't think it's helpful given the offence it can cause to the Jewish community because it isn't accurate.

How come she isn't part of the majority of Israelis given that the right wing zionist parties were voted in again? Time and time again. They seem to have free rein to do what the fuck they like as a result of the majority in the Knesset. There is no majority dissenting voice in Israel. The majority are all going along with it.

Djpekingman most Israelis oppose the sustained and permanent 'resettlement' of Gaza. 26% is the highest figure I've seen in recent polling in support of re-establishing the Gush Katif settlements in Gaza. Even in the relatively immediate aftermath of October the 7th, when attitudes might have been expected to harden, a Times of Israel poll in December of 2023 showed that 56% opposed the long-term annexation of Gaza with 33% in favour.

How have the minority with extreme genocidal views been allowed to have all the power then, without the majority in a democracy stopping the killing of civilians like fish in a barrel?

cordshoes all polling in Israel for the last few months has the 'opposition coalition' (often referred to as the '36th government' and the first to include an independent Arab party) well ahead of Netanyahu's total support (usually between 60-65 Knesset seats where 61 is needed for a majority as against the low 40s to mid 50s). The current coalition has a 68 to 52 hold on power which potentially gives an indication of a shift in attitudes. There are nuances to the figures as some are dependent on who stands for particular parties and the inherent uncertainty of multi-party pacts.
Hadash-Ta-al, the Arab party partnership could secure around 5 seats.
A Times of Israel poll in March of this year found that 70% of Israelis didn't trust Netanyahu's government. 69% supported a deal to end the war and secure the return of the hostages.
Don't forget that the next election won't be held until October of 2026.
