Part of the passing around/beat the press malarkey stems from Barca, and Barca came up with the idea to best utilise the players they had. The majority of the team were 5ft 9 or under, and couldn’t compete physically for the ball with a bigger bulkier player at point of challenge.
Shortarses they might have been, but technically excellent. So, a tactic was devised to get them on the ball to feet and limit 50/50’s or aerial challenges.
It also helped that they could win free kicks softly when physically bettered.
