English top tier football is facing two powerful forces: FFP and the ongoing competitiveness of the PL. I’m not sure how it is resolved.
All I’m saying, is that Forest came up, spent £x and have stayed up. Other, better teams (at the time of their promotion) have spent less and gone down. To my mind Forest have set the benchmark on first season expenditure.
Both Ipswich (£120m) & Southampton (£100m) have spent serious money this season and chances are both will go down. For the money that they’ve spent, they’ve basically assembled very good championship teams.
Last season was a debacle for us, Luton and Burnley. The Premier League will not idly sit by and watch 3 teams, flail about for 38 games, hopelessly out of their depth. They’ll either loosen the financial constraints or they’ll reduce the number of promoted teams or they’ll stop relegation.
Staying up in the first and second seasons, barring a major fuck up thereafter, should guarantee a place at the top table indefinitely. It’s like compound interest.
