Certain Universities, mainly in tne Russell group, do have an issue with snobbishness towards those with strong Northern accents.
Mates have had children there who have felt it.
Durham is the obvious one.
The Home Counties crowd have had more sheltered upbringing so this is just their way of dealing with it i.e. kicking down on poorer kids.
