I posted on here years ago about a global carve up happening at some point, I didn't see the squeeze on Europe though, it looks like the yanks are anticipating right wing European governments buying into their shite.

One thing I'd consider if I wasa European leader is suspension of democracy and the formation of coalition governments to navigate this period. The power of social media and the misinformation makes democracy very dangerous. Obviously for credence any coalition needs to embrace the right to a degree and finding common ground might not be possible if they are queueing up to lick Trumps arse. We have to almost be on a war footing and to send very strong signals.

The danger is that Putin at Trumps behest would wage a slow grinding war with Europe to suck energy out of any European response.

Misura I think that the best way to counter the current nonsense is to rejoin Europe asap, on basically the same terms we left on (not 100% ideal for either side, but expedient and the ‘price’ of doing the deal), and start fighting fire with fire. Increase military budgets, increase standing army numbers & re-arm. Probably re-introduce national service in UK.

National Service would cripple the country, imagine having to send all teenage kids to do military service every year. The logistic organization of that is going to be some task in itself. Then getting all the mandem to go as opposed to making drill videos for tik tok.

I cant imagine that senior Military and Intelligence Service people in the US are happy about this leaning towards Putin. The professional elite in the US have been battling Putin since he took office.

We are looking at the spectre of an aggressive expansionist Russia, a disengaged USA and a malevolent China.

Obviously having a large standing army is expensive. Plugging that gap with a small increase of full time soldiers and Territorials is the cheapest. The national service would mirror what other countries in Europe do, and would at least make sure that if the worse case scenario happened, people of conscription age would know one end of a gun from the other. The fact that that idea seems so far fetched is more a statement of how fragmented society is, than the quality of the idea itself.

Re Brexit? Grasp the nettle go back to the Polls. The mood of the country has shifted. Getting back in would be surprisingly quick & easy if all parties were willing.

If it is necessary to build a big reserve army then put the case properly, pay them £5k a year to be a reserve for 15 years.

If they want to make being a squaddie attractive build them a house for free after 10 years service and you'd get plenty joining up. Depends how serious they are.

I see where you're coming from. All the statistics from wars split the casualties as Upper Class and Working Class and nothing in between. In WW1 and WW2 the rich kids were more likely to die than the poor kids.

But yeah, the poorer end are the more likely to join the forces due to lack of other options but on the other hand it's all a game to the fox hunting, grouse shooting end of the spectrum. It will be the middle classes that don't pull their weight - and those with enough education to know what's coming. You know. People like us. :)

1) Europe should announce its willingness to quit NATO - if upping payment in NATO to 5% GDP (which as a total spend would be much more than US's $ amount spent), with the US clearly compromised, and then spending all that money on US hardware, why not go 5% and announce a full departure from NATO and end all US arms deals, keep defence spend in the EU, means the money stays in the EU and creates jobs and economies.
2) Work out a new grand strategic bargain with Russia & keep Trump away from the table, it's not his fight and he's not in Europe's corner, anything but, no Trump and US parties should be at the table!
3) Work out a new strategic compact with China - anti China sentiment has been an "ass kiss" for the US, who are clearly not prepared to kiss back, time to cool down on being against China's expansion into Africa, it means more jobs created in Africa, standard of living shifts = less migrants coming into EU and UK.
