Going away after the ticket restrictions came in wasn’t much fun. I went regularly 85/86 but most of the lads I knew who were a good laugh had stopped going. I wasn’t a knuckle merchant and I didn’t really care for the supporters club bus in and out style of away day so I was a bit lost. Consequently, I stopped going away the following season. I stopped going to home games if enough of us got a lock in and we usually did. I didn’t even try get a ticket for the ‘87 game though some of my mates did. I’ve seen photos of some of them camping out to make sure they were well placed in the queue for when the ticket office opened and, in hindsight, it looks like they had a lot of fun. At the time the idea just didn’t appeal to me. In truth I don’t recall watching the game. I’m not sure if I watched it live or saw highlights afterwards. I was a late starter by most people’s standards with alcohol but I’d embraced it fully by then and going for a drink seemed much more important than football, than anything at the time.
It’s a ball ache getting into the city on a weekend and it’s supposed to be pissing it down most of the day. I don’t care much for the bar the Leeds lot watch the games in either though they are a nice bunch. I’ll probably just watch it in my pjs in the living room. Wednesday I got word of a spare ticket and looked up flights for Friday night before copping myself on.
I think they’ve got enough about them to win.
