Chesney's, Albert Avenue, Hull. Pre war recipie for the batter. Gingham curtains at the windows. Prices written in whitewash. Only sells fish, chips and patties. And Rizlas. None of this fancy pies or peas or chicken or gravy nonsense. The owner, sadly deceased, kept on frying til the age of 92. His son, a spritely 69 year old, carries the torch. Ten out of ten for everything.

Fish and chips outside of Yorkshire just aren't up to scratch.Websters, Baildon, West Yorks.Haddock and chips, £3.25.Best fish and chips I've had.Special mention to the chippy by Morecambe's ground, mind you, that is Bradford-on-sea.

Won't bother rating Old Station Fisheries as the figures would be biased but all i'll say is that it is lovely. Other decent ones i've eaten at are Buzzy Lizzies in Skipton and Magpies in Whitby - but they were a long time ago and I don't have a very good memory so can't really do any reliable scoring. So it's pretty pointless me posting on this thread at all.

Did anyone ever go in that chippy near Britannia in Holbeck? It was tucked in a back street a couple of streets away and was part of a house. 2 old dears serving. Used to be divine but closed about 1.30 on matchday.I went in United Fisheries a year ago and it was toss.

I knew someone would remember it. You'd get a severe staring at for uttering anything even approaching swearing.

Brian's in headingly used to be brilliant. So did the one off Easterly Road on Dib Lane (been a while). Haddock (special), cooked to order no batter - which meant just a thin coating. Fishcakes and mushy peas, cod optional. As soon as you move south and they stop using dripping.....urgh they're shite, and they have weird stuff like Plaice. I mean eveyone knows its Haddock in a chippy don't they?
Harvest
Do they still have that rock salmon shit down there? Renamed rock salmon as the real name of dogfish or wolf-fish didn't sound too appealing. Wonder why?

Nash's in Chapel Allerton used to be very good - but they considered themselves a bit up market.Don't get me started on Midlands Fish and Chip shops. Some of them only cook fish if you ask for it so you have to wait ten minutes. Always cod with unusually rectangular shape for a fishThey've never heard of haddock, let alone scraps. Not much change out of a fiver either.

Rudi, you never mentioned Smithy's on Beverley Road. I used to drive thro Hull every night after delivering to YE on Clough Rd. I used to call at Smithy's and have a special, patty, chips and curry sauce or peas for a quid! and this was only seven years ago.I was back in Leeds in Dec last year for the Dogshaggers game, and after a skinful inthe Grove and then the Taps, I had fish chips and peas @ Crown Fisheries. I was staying at my mates pub, th Dalesman on Moorgrange and when I'd legged it from Headingley station, I was hungry again, so called at amidgeleys on Butcher Hill for same again.Ballingers in Otley used to be good. Think they now call it Maypole.

Bryans of Headingley, used to go out with the owners daughter there in the 60's. She had a face like a plasterers radio, but I got a free supper every other night. That's when I started to put weight on. No sex and free food. Marvellous!
