IIRC Aldi had received planning permission to build a new store on the Ramsden site a few months back. At the time it sounded like it was going to be built in the car park behind. It looks like they'll be able to build an even bigger shop now.

Harry Ramsden's: re-opening as a Wetherby Whaler apparently. Never been there, is it any good?
Harry Ramsden's: re-opening as a Wetherby Whaler apparently. Never been there, is it any good?
Gave the takeaway a go this afternoon. Not cheap by local standards - £3.20 haddock, £1.50 chips. The chips were rather dried out and chewy - it was mid-afternoon, so they may have been hanging around too long. The fish was freshly fried. (I've read somewhere they use dripping, which is my personal preference). The batter had a uniform, armour-plated appearance with no flaky bits, as if it had been battered on a conveyor belt and chilled/ frozen, rather than dip-battered just before frying. It was a more reddy-golden colour than if David Dickinson had fallen head-first into a bath of spray-on tanning lotion, having been trapped on a tanning bed for several hours. It was also a touch greasy. Saying that, it tasted okay, but definitely nothing special.5/10. No return visit planned in the near future.
Went to The Mermaid [Harehills] on Monday evening. Fish & chips £4.10, fish cooked to order but the chips had been sitting a long time. They are doing a lunchtime special till 3pm for medium fish, chips and mushy peas or a breadcake for £2.90.
Now £4.75 and utterly tasteless, undercooked too.
