I too was never much of a fan, though I cherish my vinyl copies of THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD and ZIGGY STARDUST. But I admired his imaginativeness and his nerve--he perfected the connection of rock to fashion and style.

I can lay claim to the curious experience of having heard him live without being there! My house in Brisbane overlooked the RL stadium Lang Park, where he performed in 1978, and from my room I could hear him singing.

Rugby doping, hmm? Well, back to Bowie: my American vinyl copy of THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD doesn't have the infamous cover of Bowie in a dress, but it's good in its own pop art/cartoon style. It shows a gunman who has shot out a town hall clock. His verbal caption is strangely blank. Someone once told me it was a rare cover that was replaced early doors by the infamous one. Anyone know about that?

A mate of mine used to be pretty high up in the prison service. Can't say more than that other than he was at Wakefield nick.

A few years ago we were sat round a firepit at latitude festival boozing and talking and got him talking about various inmates including the crossbow cannibal, Charlie bronson and the like. It was one of the most interesting nights I've ever had. Really gripping stuff, like how when ian Huntley tried to kill himself and stuff. I asked if they admitted what they'd done before drawing their final breath, did he ask? He said no one admitted fuck all.

I asked if he had seen evil. As in, has he sat with murderers and thought they were pure evil, seen it in their eyes. Been scared even. And without a pause he said Robert black. He described how he would look straight through you and unnerved even the biggest screws and my mates a big fella.

He told us that black got attacked inside and it was a paid job. A fella tried to kill him in an organised attack but failed and black nearly killed his attacker.

Because of the incident they had to have an internal investigation. Black would be brought in by the two biggest screws and then questioned. Whatever my mate asked him, he didn't reply, he just stared at my pals eyes throughout. Staring through him unblinking every time.

He's met the wildest maddest murderers in UK prisons and black is the only one he genuinely thought was pure evil if there is such a thing.

I find it quite remarkable that Bowie became the icon that he did when during the 70's his music, persona and style were so left-field. But he did and listening to, and seeing, his amazing collection of work over the last few days, it makes you realise that the X-factor generated "stars" of modern day music aren't really worthy of the name.

way more bothered about this than Bowie. I worked on Truly Madly Deeply but didn't meet him then. Ran into him in Pizza Express in Leeds in 95 and Nisha who would go on to "discover" Harry Potter for the screen inveigled him in to doing an audience at the Northern Film school where we were studying. Myself and my co producing mate drove him to the train station after he'd spoke at the school and pitched him on a script called "Howzat Mein Fuhrer" which would have cast him as the SS comander of a German Cricket team bent on humiliating the British prior to WW2. He was a gent though he ultimately passed he did send us the way of the Red Dwarf lot though our option had lapsed by then.

Fucking Hell! I'm getting a bit brassed off with all my favourites karking it. Why not piers Morgan, eh? I'd pay good money to see that cunt 6' under.
AR did the first, good cinematic steal of the "Keef" persona as the voice of Go,d in Dogma. Love that film and AR is/ was a great actor. RIP

I was in trouble with our lass tonight for not knowing who Alan Rickman is. I knew the name but that's all.

I don't think Bowie's music was left field in the 70s, persona definitely.
