Did a route out of Mirfield yesterday. First time I'd had a crack at it. Very much a trip of extremes. The mud in places was crazy, over a foot deep and at times the whole of the bridleway was like that. Bike on the shoulder time trying to skirt along the sides. On the plus side were some of the downhill bits. The route was out of Benji Howarth's book. He reckons some of the singletrack is 'best kept secret' stuff (or was until he published a book with it in!).He's not wrong. There's a descent that runs along the edge of Mirfield golf course that just seems to go on forever. Really quick although a massive tree right across the trail meant more bike carrying. One good thing about the mud is that you can get the back wheel out a bit at times. Good fun just grabbing bits of back brake and feeling it slide out. If you get it right on a corner you feel like a pro. When you don't you feel like a twat. With all the mud the face and everything else ended up covered. Some got under my Oakleys and stung like a fucker for a lot of the ride, fuck knows what's in some of it.....The book says the climb up through Whitley Wood is testing. A bastard is more accurate. Gang of kids had a right fire going with shelters built and everything. State of them I reckon they might be living in there!A good ride that was more knackering than I realised.

I was out 630 ish this morning still in the dark. Wrapped warm so I was ok, plus I did plenty of climbing. Great sky as the sun was coming up, which turned everything pale blue. Proper moody, but great to look at. The lanes weren't too icy either which was good, but were still flooded. Anyway 29k with 633metre of climbing in an hour and half.

I did my first training session tonight with the fella who I am doing the London to Paris thing with. A nice flat run out over the other side of the bridge. He put the hammer down on the last straight before the bridge. I thought I did ok seen as he was on road bike and I was on my hybrid, which will soon get dropped with some new bars. If he keeps doing this, this will be good training as I am just a steady pace merchant. This will get the fitness better. Well in theory? I reckon cycling has got same smart phrases. Putting the hammer down. Dancing on the pedals. Tapping out the rhythm. Well three anyway. My mind has gone blank!

First proper ride 2morow. 100k audax but we are riding to the start, and the finish so will be nearer 150k. The only problem is my best bikes bottom bracket is making a funny crunching noise. So I will be crossing my fingers that it holds out. I am not having much luck with this bike since chrimbo so I needs some luck with him!
Young_Marxist_at_Tescos
That "funny crunching noise" usually indicates that your bottom bracket's fucked.I wouldn't go to the shops on it, never mind try a 150km ride.Good luck.

Great news. Forks have finally had it. Al at the always brilliant Garage Bikes in Morley has tried to save them before (and never charged!) but for what they'd need to sort them it's not worth the effort or brass.I shouldn't moan as I've had 5 years out of them and they've been hammered in that time. Problem is the £250-300 minimum I haven't got to buy new ones. Looking on the bright side the new jockey wheel for the rear mech will cost a tenner.Staying local tomorrow. Weather was foul today so it'll be interesting....

I played safe and went out on my old Dawes bike. Good job as the bottom bracket wouldn't have lasted! It was a great ride, we made it in time for the 830 start after setting off at 730. The first 30 ish miles were a piece of piss, just less than 2hrs with the sun shining and the wind behind us. Just as we looped back around on the way back my mate bonked good style. So after a banana a couple of gels and hanging on to my back wheel he made it to a small town where we could stock up on some food. From there it wasn't too bad, but the wind was right into us at about 15mph. At the last control the wind and the way to the finish it must have been 20mph. My target of 5hrs went, as we were pissing it the first bit, but we ended up finishing in 5hrs 22mins which wasn't that bad. Plus I had to queue for nearly 10minutes to get a cuppa at the last control. The way home was horrendous. We had to go over the Severn bridge and we were struggling to stand up straight let alone cycle. I wasn't feeling too bad up to this point but I was fucked on the other side of the bridge. We must have been in the bottom gear for 5miles! Still 86mile in which ain't bad for the first training ride. 150k next in 4weeks!

Good work UTA. The wind can be a bastard. Was the same on that Dales ride. Can sap your resolve as well. Pushing hard and getting nowhere. Spent the last couple of hours buying loads of kit and stacks of bikes. In my head. Fuck I wish I had a few grand.Had a week off the spin. Back on it Tuesday. Big push this year
