Lad I know through work got to 128 miles.....and his rear mech fell off! No way it could be fixed. Got to Whitby in a van. He was properly fucked off as, despite not getting as many miles in as he wanted before hand, he was going well. He's in for next year.Need to sort accommodation.

What's the name of them there cycle races/rides? I'm thinking of 100 milers round the Peak District or Yorkshire Dales style. Not sportive, possibly got an 'x' in. Imax? Pumax? Chillax? Danke.
Placid
Audax?

It would be great. Guarantee it's head and shoulders above anything you ever aspired to as a kid. It would get you out there and if you take to it and decide you want an upgrade you won't have put too much into your first bike.If I was getting back into cycling I'd spend more than I did, mine's the base model in Bianchi's steel bike range but I don't regret buying my bike.Ride up grades don't buy upgrades.Go for it. But if you think you want something a bit better have a look on Planet X's website, some great deals and financing.
Right I have never ventured on this thread before but really need to get my arse in gear and do something to get fit. I dont think running is an option as my 50th is on the horizon and I ache like fuck some mornings anyway from old injuries. So a cheap road bike to get me started is looking like the best option. When I mean cheap I mean cheap.Like would this be any good?http://www.rutlandcycling.com/314413/products/2015-marin-argenta-a6-road-bike-black.aspx
Fill your bootshttp://road.cc/content/buyers-guide/160769-best-road-bike-bargains-under-500I'd visit a few shops, even Evans, just to get to sit on a few, even ride the odd one around a carpark. You'll ride one that 'fits' more than one that was cheap.Cuts is right. It'll ride better than anything you've been on before. I have a £650 road bike. First time I did the Etape Du Dales I did it on a borrowed bike with wheels that cost £2k. I did it this year on my cheap one. The back hurt less on mine. It's a 64cm frame, the flash one was a 58cm.

Good shout CBIT it does. Can probably push the budget up quite a bit on the basis of that. Theres a carbon one on that Rutland webiste for £600 . Am I getting too ambitious too early?

I know Halfords have a shit rep for how they prep stuff but Boardman bikes consistently win tests in all the magazines. Cheap but with really good components.I'd still visit your local shop. Tell them exactly what you want to get out of the bike and that you don't know much about them. Rather than try and rip you off most will give you loads of really good advice and they don't forget you bought a bike from them. The discounts on the net are killing some so they offer much more in terms of advice and trying to keep you as a customer. I bought my first mountain bike from Stif in Headingley. They had a rep back then for being aloof wankers but even they helped me with loads. Indexed my gears after a few weeks. No charge and showed me what I needed to do in future.

I'm 6'2" and ride a 58cm - mind you, it's a Cannondale so in real money it's a 60. 64, though - Attack of the Fifty Foot Barrister, anyone?
Travis_Bickle
6'4. 36" inside leg. My bike has been described variously as a 'farm gate', a 'climbing frame' and an 'oil rig'. First road bike that 'fits' mind.
