Fucking hell why isnt buying a bike as simple as my Raleigh Arena 5 speed when I was 11? Bikes supplied with no pedals???
Travis_Bickle
See quite a few Decathlon bikes out and about and they do okay in reviews. Sora isn't a bad groupset for a 'first' bike either. You can go to Sheffield and sit on one before you buy. As for pedals you can ride with flats (normal pedals, just put your foot on and pedal), toe clips (various kinds, some bikes come with cheap plastic ones) or ride clipped in (you're fixed to the pedal and 'unclip' to avoid falling over when you stop).Had one 'off' when clipped on the MTB. Never on the road bike. Might be as well to start with flats. Get used to riding again and then decide if you want to go clipped.

Been thinking about this for ages but I reckon we've enough wheelers on here now to justify it so I reckon we need an OMJ cycling top.For starters let's work out colour(s). White, blue and yellow seem obvious but suggestions welcome. We can add some 'faux' sponsors 'Gore's Cold Lamb' etc.Any thoughts welcome...

If we all did the odd article for ST I reckon you could get DHM to sponsor. Plain white top with the ST bomb on the back.

Fucking hell just pedalling is proving difficult enough at present never mind wearing all the gear.Embarrasing how bad I rode my new bike

Don't worry about it. Stick at it. Use your gears, take it easy and you'll be suprised hiw quick it comes back. Couple of months you'll be doing fine.

Fancy a crack at this cycling lark, been a while.

Easier on your joints than running.

Glad I went out in trainers a T shirt and normal shorts. Had cars stopping to let the wobbly old twat pass them in case they got scratched. I was flying at about 10 mph at one bit

Don't worry about it. First time I went out in proper cycling shoes I pulled up at a traffic light then fell over at a bus stop. Oh how we laughed. And when I say we I mean everyone waiting for the bus.

I could hardly walk afterwards, legs shaking like mad. Getting into the right gear was the hardest thing. Them shimano whatever it is are confusing as fuck when your trying to balance and pedal and sweating like a good un. Lad at work who rides was howling at my story of the first ride. He said same as Cuts keep going, he has a single gear and another.

Inspired by the Old Man, I decided it's time to get back out, fuck the weather. 80F as I left. Just put the bike back together and this was more a test of if I'd fastened everything down tight enough. Not a hope in hell of doing my old circuit - way too hilly for a first ride out in probably over a year. Slid out the bottom of Verona along Pleasant Valley Way (of Carol King and The Monkeys fame). It's just been resurfaced and it's almost flat for about 3 miles. Lovely stuff. Not too much traffic either. Gets a bit hairy when you go past the Jewish old people's home - all Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles driven by midget women in their 90s who wear those sunglasses that are like two TVs stuck on your face - pulling out halfway across the first lane then having a look to see if it's clear. Lets just say the road undulates more than I thought it did. Every easy downhill meant I'd be struggling on the return leg. It's a nice twisty road, nicely shaded as it cuts through South Mountain Reservation. Pulled at the playhouse in Milburn. Bloke on a proper racing type bike and all the gear and physic to go with it pulled up and asked me if I was ok. Pleasant surprise, those sort usually motor on. Coming back was a bit harder but I kept off the small cog. Our street is a pretty steep hill so I came the long way through town so I could come down it lest the neighbours see me pushing. No chance. Just shy of 20 miles and the legs are wobbly. Had some beans on toast and I'm off for a shower. Nothing fell off the bike and I survived. Drank half my water poured the rest over my head and down my back as I rode. Didn't really notice the temperature.Cheap and cheerful, that's my ride. \/

256 feet of 'climbing over a mile almost killed me today. Putting it down to the bottle of Iron Bru. Out of shape doesn't begin to describe my current state. Granny ring.
