Anchor Cheers. Had another run tonight, nearly 7 miles - 11.13 km. Managed that in 1:01:09 at a pace of, wait for it, 8.50! Chuffed to bits with that.

Anchor Don't often do it, but was up for it the last 2 times. At my age it can vary from week to week. I'll say one thing, it has made me much stronger, even though I look increasingly like a stick man!

What's everyone using to track their runs? Strava or similar?

I actually got some gear yesterday in the sales, running shorts and top. I now need an app to track times / distance.

I plan on pushing out for my first run at 10:30 pm tonight, symbolic as I stopped drinking for good last week. I doubt I'll get very far, as it's been like 10 years since I've ran anywhere properly.

king_of_the_slums Fair play KOS - any idea why you are canning the booze? It is a recuring theme for me.

I use an old fit bit. It has GPS and I like the fact I can look at my route and all the associated data. Although it is on it's way out.

I have started using strava on my phone for my bike and have just bought a runners bumbag to use strava for my runs as well.

Raposa Can't you sync the garmin to your strava account? If you want, obvs.

I have a Garmin GPS runners watch.
If I can be bothered I can hook it up to my laptop and download the route I've run.
These days I only use it for checking distance and not really interested in minutes per mile.
Your body usually tells you if you've done ok or not and if I'm honest,at my age it's about getting a few miles in,a good sweat on and keeping everything ticking over.

Anchor Booze: Just an amalgamation of stuff really. I'm a social drinker, but our lass always has beers in the house, so I've gone from a few beers every 3 weeks or so, to 3 cans a night. I'm not drinking to get pissed but drinking as it's cold and in the fridge. Want to put a stop to that. Trying to get my head straight as well. Working from home. Trying to learn Japanese. Being a foreigner in another country. 2nd kid coming in October. 50 in December. Just trying to control the controlables and make sure I'm around into me 80's or so. Don't need to drink, so have canned it. Next step is to get fit, can't do gyms, but always liked running.

I got myself in a place a few months ago where I was just having three or four once a weekend but it seems lockdown has ramped that up to getting banjaxed twice or three times a week.

Thinking about it my 22 year loves a drink and loves drinking with me - we were bad for each other as he shielded at home!!! Still I loved drinking at 22 as well!

I am attempting to get back to just two or three a weekend as I enjoy a nice IPA or what not. But the idea of contolling things resonates. I tend to crack and smoke fags when i'm drunk - not so much if I just have a few. I very much want to be a non smoker.

Good luck with the running and having a baby at 50! I'm 51 in November and very much out the other side - my youngest starts college today.

Anchor Been here 14 years in two stints, but my language skills are pub level at best, so trying to change that so I can at least conduct meetings in Japanese. Not easy but I can read and write a little, so shouldn't be too hard. Just need to put a lot of work in on speaking and getting sentences down, other than 2 beers please and can I have the cheque..

I did 3 miles for my first outing today, 36 minutes. Might go out and do it again later.

3 miles a day should get me there for the first few weeks.

Get under 30-32 mins then add a mile, but go purposely slow then build up again.

Inadvertently ran 10.7 miles today (it's a long story) in 01:35:52. Don't know if that's good, but I felt the extra 3 miles or so.

Precinct_Boy I don't know what a good average is as I've never done it before. Furthest I've ever run in one session. Being 56 and fairly new to this running lark, I struggle to compare how I'm doing to anyone else, or averages for my age. All I do is, like Leeds, give it a go a couple of times a week and see what happens. The thing I 'enjoy' most, is the speed with which I get my breath back to normal and my heart rate stabilises once I've stopped. Currently, it's around 20 seconds. Amazing.
