But I once tried to convince myself it was a lazy/easy way to write. Not so sure now.

I tried one of his post-war Japanese novels. Really didn’t enjoy it.

I like the way his football novels get you to look at things and open your eyes to facts.

Red or Dead reminded me that between 1966 and 1973, Liverpool won fuck all. Nothing.

In that same period, Leeds won the English league title, the FA Cup, the League Cup and two European trophies.

Fair enough, from 73 onwards, Liverpool became dominant, in Europe and domestically. But Shankly’s idea that his team was the best in Europe post-war? I don’t think so.

Football seasons start in one year and end in the next. August to May or thereabouts.

You don't stop at the end of December.

You can't get to a final, without being in the competition from the start. You can't win a league, without amassing a points total from game number one.

Chap wrote Galveston and obvs True Detective.

Just finished stray dogs by Richard j parfitt. He was in the 60ft dolls who I am a bit obsessed with by the minute.

I thought it was pretty good for a first novel. Set in Toronto

By the bass player from Spacemen 3. Very well written with a self deprecating sense of humour. It makes the drug taking shenanigans in the vast majority of music biogs that I have read seem very, very tame in comparison.

fuzzy that is one of the best music books I have read. His description of what music means to him at the end is right how I feel

Espionage, early 60s. Congo, London, Spain, Poland. Not among his absolute best but enjoyable. An ‘entertainment’, in Graham Greene terms. I can’t quite work out if the reader is supposed to regard the protagonist as being particularly dim, or if that’s just my view of him.

Just finished Irvine Welsh’s ‘Resolution’ and Bob Mortimer’s ‘The Hotel Avocado’ in the last week. Enjoyed both. Not exactly classics, but easy reading, page turners, especially after wading through the first two Sherlock Holmes books (‘A Study in Scarlet’ and ‘The Sign of Four’ - started off fast-paced but gradually slowed right down and SH is far more pompous on paper than even the TV portrayals).
Just got Al Pacino’s autobiography ‘Sonny Boy’ and listening to an audiobook of ‘Never Understood: The Jesus And Mary Chain’, which is ace and better for the Reid brothers reading their bits (I don’t generally like listening to books, but autobiographies are sometimes better if the actual people are reading it).

I think Welsh has hit a good streak with the crime trilogy. Airport fiction ennit. p
Police procedural affair but dark, funny and railing against cunts.
