Barely into March and here's the Book of the Year. Absolutely brilliant. A collection of all Barry Gifford's 'Roy' stories - hundreds of them over 700 pages, all between 1 and 4 pages long.
Not really stories really, just snapshots of this boy's life, growing up in Chicago and Florida in the 50's and early 60's; his mob-adjacent dad, his glamorous mum, his mates and the street life of Chicago. Largely autobiographical, it's written through the eyes of Roy and he writes so well, a great portrait of America at a time and place.
