My mate nearly ran him over in a supermarket car park in Colchester. He was mortified. Big JCC fan.

I've a lovely memory of my dad crying with laughter when he heard I Married A Monster From Outer Space. It was the hand in tentacle line that set him off. My dad had a fantastic laugh. His pupils danced and shone when he laughed.

Couldn’t get the John Cooper Clarke book over here but I downloaded the audiobook from Audible ( there’s a special offer on, two free downloads then cancel anytime). JCC is the narrator. It’s brilliant. The man’s grasp
of English is astounding, his choice of worlds almost perfect. I think it’s inevitable that I’d have read the physical book in his voice anyway. Just over two hours in. Would recommend. Will probably but a copy as and when.

otis I really enjoyed Sweet Dreams. It’s an oral history, so you don’t have to put up with too much Dylan Jones talking about bands being “the talk of the town” and London being “one big catwalk” etc etc.

Bruce Springsteen's autobiography, "Born To Run". It's pretty amazing. He can really write. Early doors in, but I've already had to re-adjust my mental image of him.

Rudi In what way? From what to what? I always thought Of him as somewhere between Dylan and Strummer. I like him, what I know of him.

I read Meet Me In The Bathroom. That was an oral history. Confusing as fuck. That whole New York scene coincided with the kids and us moving out to the burbs. Apart from The Walkmen and The Strokes stuff, I didn’t really have a clue what the hell I was actually reading. I guess you really need to know the people concerned for oral
histories to work.

Jon Yeah, it’s a good point. Best ones I’ve read are really bringing very familiar stories to life.

CBIT Is that a good book? Is it better than Bernard’s or Hooky’s?

Jon He's really harsh on himself with regards to his family set up and his behaviour and attitudes as a kid. I always had him down as a pretty humble no-frills kinda fella, but the prose style is highly charged, very literary. It reads like Steinbeck or something. I was expecting something kind of self-effacing and downbeat, it's nothing of the sort. I suppose the voice I had in my head was kinda the "cars and girls" Bruce of later years. This is more the high-flown romanticism of The Wild, The Innocent ..." It's a brilliant read so far. He should write a novel. It reads like a novel.

Jon I enjoyed it (but then i would wouldn't i ?) Hook's New Order one (Substance)is my favoured one so far, but i'll reserve judgement till I've read Fast Forward which is Morris's version of the New Order years (Stop Play Record covers his early life up until JD ended)

fulmine I had no idea what a oral history was. I got sick of flipping to the list of who’s who and what band they belonged to. It was generally a well received book though.

I can’t remember if I read it or heard him moaning about it online somewhere but the thought of Hooky getting upset because they were making him look bad in front of Molly Ringwald brought a smile to my face.
I didn’t realise Morris had broken it into two books. Smart lad.
