Kevin_Stapleton I can’t easily think of a novel better suited to the OMJ demographic: “this is what you did and this is what you’ve got to look forward to.”
I really enjoyed it but had slight reservations over the sheer number of characters in the first half and then was a bit unconvinced by the characterisation of the narrator’s partner in the second.
That aside, it gets a strong recommendation from me.

Cooley It's on my Kindle but haven't got round to it yet. Thematically, ,from what I've seen, it has some similarities to the first half of Mayflies. Anyone read both?

oneallanclarke Different to Mayflies. Liked it; great descriptions of small town life from what I remember, it's a few years ago since I read it. He's really into Nurse With Wound and that sort of noise, and the music in this is similar.

oneallanclarke Yup, read both and both very different. Mayflies is great because you start off not liking the characters very much and then you just love them (or I did). Sort of like an ITV drama. Memorial Device is nearly too bleedin clever for its own good but still very enjoyable.

What a gem of a book. Runs out of steam a bit at the end but he writes deceptively well about a lost world.

otis I finished it. I ended up leaving it half read for a while. It must be an age thing but not really enjoyed it enough like I used to. The spud bit (the dialect) never really appealed to me in all the stuff I have read, but that's my opinion. Sick boy true to form but overall the Begbie bit was like a coming of age sort of thing. The best stuff is the juice stories. Ah well.

I like the way it all interweaves with documented history though. That's quite clever.

Italys sorrow. James Holland. Ww2 campaign from 1944 -45. Very very good if you like war books. Anthony Beevor quality. Good to read this as lots of stuff I didn’t know. Very messy, violent & different factions. Fuck war man.

i personally found it interesting as my granddad was a lorry driver on all 3 landings. He got shrapnel in his leg & won a pig when he climbed up a pole?

Under-the-ground In a similar vein I've just finished Naples '44 by Norman Lewis, an account of a britsh intelligence officer in the days after the Naples liberation. A cracking read, highlighting the desperation and dehumanisation of the poverty during this period. War is indeed a cunt.

white_dragon I'm ploughing through that at the moment. He comes across as a bit of a wanker really (and literally), but interesting to hear the story from a non Lydon/Maclaren pov. Watch this space for Savillesque or Peelesque allegations.....
