Kevin_Stapleton they're in as Champions League winner from 20/21. The bigger piss take is Inter Miami being in it. Miami are a host nation free pick, and they're about 3rd or 4th best team in USA, but have the big names. For Europe it's last 4 CL winners and then the next 8 best aggregated in UEFA rankings over the last 4 years. That;s how Juventus have managed to get in.
The whole things is an absolute farce as far as I can see. The rumour is that SA and FIFA have cosied up and created this thing. FIFA floated the idea of the competition, which is very financially attractive to clubs outside of europe, and allows a higher glass ceiling for teams in the new money leagues in US & Middle East. SA bought a % of Dazn for $1bn dollars, Dazn then offered to buy exclusive TV rights from FIFA for a $1bn, and then FIFA have put $1bn into a prize pot for all the teams. So it's just a wash through of Saudi money.
The prize money is basically split 50/50 between turning up & results.
