Gone early as got a bit on this weekend.

I know others on here probably know George personally (Otis, KOTS and Trav in particular) I don’t. I remember him from the scene in Warehouse parties, blues and clubs in Leeds. He carried himself with a lot of confidence and to be honest I was slightly in awe of him without knowing too much about him or his output. His girlfriend was stunning, this much I do remember from the time. @otis feel free to give us some background on him and Burley at the time. It's your manor.

Anyway, the tune is arguably one of the finest electronic tunes to come out of Leeds and the UK at that time (on par with Voodoo Ray for sure). And that’s up against some other strong contenders, Soft Cell, LFO, Utah Saints, FC Kahuna. Their tune Bleep Freak feels like a direct descendant of Dextrous.

What I want to know is how has some lad (only a year older than me) 19 at the time of recording, how has he consumed all this music and culture to give him the motivation and inspiration then managed to get his hands on the technology to create this music. How has he had the confidence and foresight to do this when all I was interested in was swaggering about looking like a ponce and trying to get my leg over. It really irks me, a wasted life of an appreciator vs a creator.

He grew up to a similar musical backdrop to us, Punk, Ska, Two Tone, Reggae, Hip Hop, Im sure I remember the lads he used to breakdance with come to our youth club and be completely amazed by it. The main difference between me and him of which I could see was the confidence to have a go, that and his talent of course. I lacked hard on both. Looking back on those times, if I could re run them. Id do everything I could to get some kit together and have a go at making music. Others tried (mates from the scene) and are still having a go today without much success but they're doing it out of love and thats to be admired and congratulated.

A mixed-race lad from Burley who’s grown up in this northern post war town with all the grey people, beige cars, dull clothes, bland food and blander music and he’s created something so completely unique, different, something so far ahead in the future from fuck all. I absolutely love that. All his background and experiences have met at a confluence and inspired him to create something completely different and groundbreaking. He seems to have created himself a great life out of music. His Car Boot Soul and Smokers Delight are still as excellent today as they were when released.

Wont be everyone’s cup of tea and all that blather above might be a self-centred view of the tune and artist. But yano, its my go so up yer bum.
